Secretory IgA is composed of approximately equal concentrations of IgA1 and IgA2. Secretory IgA is responsible for binding antigens at the mucosal surface which will inhibit microorganisms from binding to epithelial cell surfaces. The quantitation of salivary IgA is useful in investigating recurrent upper respiratory infections in children.
